While he did a good job on films such as Royal Tanenbaums and The Life Aquatic and The French Dispatch, this one is a trainwreck.
The ending is deus-ex-machina, because the God-like power to walk off set, break the fourth wall, and interpret the movie as a metaphor of unsure symbolism is a God-like ability.
Asteroid City is wordy and lacks rising action. The viewer is thrust into the desert, and suddenly the movie is over before any emotional connection can develop.
